Converkit vs Mailchimp – Who’s Better?

Email marketing is necessary as a blogger or website owner to expand your audience and brand. It helps develop relationships with your followers, update them, drive sales, increase traffic and more. Getting your email marketing under wraps can be overwhelming at times but luckily there are services to help you out. Today we will be focusing on Converkit vs Mailchimp for your email marketing needs. Mastro Digital has experience with both of them so we feel we can give you an honest opinion on both.

Convertkit vs Mailchimp

Convertkit is composed of 30 team members across 23 different cities around the world with one purpose, to make email marketing easier for you. They offer a complete system to organize and grow your email lists. Some of the features include:

  • Embedded forms to collect emails.
  • Reports and data to track your growth.
  • Automations to create less work for you.
  • Drag-and-drop sequencer to create automated emails.
  • Integrates easily with RSS.
  • Organizational tools.

Their customer service team is quick and helpful with any comments or issues you may have. You can reach them through email or live chat support for whatever you may need. There are also open office hours, live training sessions, and even weekly workshops on top of this.

Similarly you’ll be able to join in on the Convertkit community where you can ask questions, help others and discuss topics. This is a wonderful resource to learn more about email marketing since the community is friendly and insightful.

As you can see below, pricing with Convertkit is based off of how many subscribers you have or plan to have in your lists. All of them offer the same features with the bigger list plan offering a free migration if necessary. You can choose to be billed on a monthly or annually basis, with the yearly option offering a nice discount. If you plan to use them for an entire year or more, you’ll end up saving money in the end run with the latter.

Everything you need for growing an email list, tracking statistics, receiving support and integrating it with your website is readily available. If you’d like a demo with one of the team members before you dive in, they will gladly show you around their system before you pay.

Mailchimp is very popular among WordPress bloggers because of the easy integration and because it is free! Well, free up to 2,000 subscribers that is. If you have more than that amount you’ll have to start paying a monthly fee but Mailchimp has reasonable pricing as you’ll see in a moment.

Some of the features you can expect are:

  • Quick integration with Shopify, WordPress, Magento and more.
  • Target customers based on behaviour and demographics.
  • A mobile app for marketing on the go.
  • Drag-and-drop campaign creator.
  • Analytics to help you optimize your campaigns.

Mailchimp pricing

Mailchimp keeps it simple and offers three plans: New Business, Growing Business, and Pro Marketer. The free plan of course is very enticing and useful but lacks depth. It is great for new email marketers and we highly recommend it until you need to grow more. The next plan starts at $10 per month and offers better demographic informaiton, unlimited sending, testing tools, and more. For the serious email marketers, the most expensive plan gives you enterprise level features such as comparative reports and multi-variate testing.

For the average store owner or blogger, you will definitely be best off choosing the free plan and then upgrading to the Growing Business plan when you feel the need.

Convertkit vs Mailchimp Conclusion

So here’s the deal. Convertkit is awesome because they offer yearly discounts, a demo, resources like workshops and an active community. Mailchimp on the other hand is free up to 2,000 subscribers and has better pricing which is great for the bootstrapping entrepreneur. Our recommendation? Try both! There is no harm in giving the free Mailchimp version a shot and testing out the Convertkit demo at some point.
